A heartbreaking clip shows a truck driver grieving after allegedly hitting and killing a pedestrian.

The 31-year-old driver, who has not been named, remained at the scene following the incident in which an 86-year-old pedestrian died.

Reports from the scene in New York say that the pedestrian was decapitated after being struck by a Department of Transportation vehicle.

According to a report from the NYPD the pedestrian had been crossing the street at around 3:30pm when the truck smashed into him.

Footage from the scene shows the driver of the truck kneeling in the road as a bystander and police officers attempt to console him.

The pedestrian's body can be seen in shot lying in the road. On the audio of the clip, a woman can be heard to say “oh my God, this is a bad day."

She then adds that the driver had been turning a corner onto Dahlgren Place when the vehicle struck the pedestrian.

The section of road is reportedly known to be a dangerous intersection.

Cops have said that the pedestrian had lived a few blocks from the site of the crash in Bay Ridge.

Concerns have previously been raised about the amount of time pedestrians have to cross the road at the intersection.

Bay Ridge resident Samia Haq pointed out that the signals on the junction do not stay on long enough for someone who walks more slowly to cross in safety.

This is a particularly pressing issue for people with disabilities and elderly people who may not be able to get across the road before the signal changes.

Haq told 12 News: “Especially the walk sign. It turns on but by the time you’re in the middle of the road, then it’s gone.

"Somebody who is disabled or somebody who cannot walk fast — it’s really really dangerous for them.”

Police have confirmed that the pedestrian, named in reports as Antonio Conigliaro, was killed on impact.

Emergency services obscured the scene from public view following the horrifying crash, with pictures showing that officers cordoned off the area.

Unsettling images from the scene show officers covering the pedestrian's remains with a white sheet.

Meanwhile, the large yellow Department of Transport truck, which is outfitted with a crane, can be seen idling in the background.

The NYPD has said that it is now conducting an investigation into the incident, and that it has not made any arrests relating to the crash.
