Benedict Cumberbatch Compared To Ali G In New PhotoshootAlamy

Booyakasha! Benedict Cumberbatch is in da house with a new photoshoot, and everyone’s saying the same thing: he looks like Ali G.

Cumberbatch and Andrew Garfield are riding similar waves of great publicity: both are set for Oscar nominations for their turns in Netflix’s The Power of the Dog and Tick, Tick… Boom! respectively; and both appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home, easily 2021’s biggest movie and already one of the most successful films in history.

With awards season in full swing, Cumberbatch joined the likes of Kristen Stewart, Lady Gaga, Denzel Washington and Adam Driver for W Magazine‘s Best Performances 2022 edition.

Donning a yellow shirt, bucket hat and pair of tinted shades, the photoshoot immediately attracted comparisons to Sacha Baron Cohen’s iconic character. ‘Looks like a comeback interview with Ali G where he bares all and says he regrets everything he did,’ one user joked.

‘Benedict Cumberbatch playing Ali G in future reboot confirmed (source: me),’ another wrote. ‘Looking forward to Benedict Cumberbatch’s gritty reboot of Ali G,’ a third tweeted. ‘Benny-C In Da House,’ a fourth joked. ‘I can’t believe they allowed Adam Driver and Denzel Washington to look so handsome and then made Cumberbatch dress like Ali G,’ another wrote.

Sadly, it’s unlikely we’ll ever see what Cumberbatch’s Ali G would be like in action. During his interview with the outlet, he spoke about how he never believed he’d be a leading man, surprising given his roles in Sherlock, Doctor Strange and The Imitation Game. ‘I got bitten very early when I saw my mum perform. I wasn’t a child actor, I’m happy about that,’ he said.

‘Nothing against people like my good cast members who have been, but I’m happy I had the experience I had. I sometimes in my twenties thought, Damn, I wish I could have started earlier, because I was never going to be playing a leading man. I look the way I look. Maybe I’m growing into my looks now.

‘I went from playing women to men in an all-boys boarding school within the space of a year. I think I was Rosalind one year, and then a year and a half later I played Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman.’

His Oscar nomination for The Power of the Dog is almost guaranteed, and he’ll return as the MCU’s sorcerer in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, due to hit cinemas in May.
