Plane is officially getting a sequel named after another mode of transport

The Gerard Butler action flick is getting a sequel

Warning: Contains spoilers for Plane

Gerard Butler's latest heart-pounding action flick Plane may have given viewers a fear of flying, but it's now set to have a sequel named after another mode of transport.

In case you haven't seen it yet, Plane follows pilot Brodie Torrance (Butler) who is forced to take matters into his own hands when his plane crashes on an island near the Philippines.

The rest of the film - which released just last month - sees Torrance team up with an accused murderer, Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter) to fight off the attackers and escape the island.

Unfortunately for Torrance and his passengers, the island is run by a militia of ruthless rebels who want to hold them hostage for ransom.

Just days after hitting screens, it's been confirmed the flick will be getting a sequel - the title of which is also a mode of transportation, perhaps giving some clues as to the second film's plot.

The name of the next entry?

Ship.

Louis Gaspare is set to be the lead in the sequel to Plane.

Set to go into production at some point this year, Ship will see the return of Gaspare - who remained on the island at the end of the film, when Torrance and the other passengers managed to make a lucky escape on board the plane.

Although initially distrusted by the others, Gaspare soon formed an unlikely alliance with Torrance and helped him escape, despite electing to stay behind.

In the upcoming sequel, Gaspare will reportedly board a cargo ship in a bid to escape the island, only to discover he is on board a ferry used in a human trafficking ring.

Gaspare will then team up with the ship's second mate/navigator in order to take down the ship's 'corrupt captain' and rescue the people being held captive aboard the boat.

Not much else is known about the project currently, but director Jean-Francois Richet is returning as an executive producer.

It's not yet known whether Butler will make a return as Torrance to get in on the action.

Plane was well received when it was released last month, securing a 94 percent audience score and 77 percent critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

One critic summed up the views of many when he wrote: "Plane does exactly what it says on the boarding pass. Gerard Butler is the king of big dumb action, getting the tone just right for those in search of uncomplicated thrills."
