Kick-Ass is being rebooted with the original director taking charge

Matthew Vaughn confirmed his plans to reboot the 2010 Kick-Ass franchise while speaking at New York's Comic Con.

It seems yet another superhero franchise is set for the Hollywood reboot treatment.

While it may feel normal now to have both shows and films with superheroes that are beacons of morality and upstanding citizens, as well as franchises showcasing the ‘dark’ side of super heroism, in 2010 this was less prevalent.

Releasing in March 2010, the Kick-Ass films - based on the 2008 comics of the same name - saw the now Hollywood stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloë Grace Moretz try their hands at superhero vigilantism as Kick-Ass and Hit Girl.

Incorporating vulgar language, violence and gore alongside a comedic tone, the film was able to find some success at the box office, grossing an estimated $96 million globally on a budget of $30 million.

Now, over a decade since the original movie was first released, Matthew Vaughn - who directed the first of the two subversive films - spoke at New York’s Comic Con and confirmed upcoming plans for the franchise.

Kick-Ass changed people's perception of what a superhero film is. We’re doing it again” Vaughn said while on a panel at the convention on Saturday.

“None of the other characters from the other Kick-Ass are in it, though we'd like to have them back after the reboot. I can't really talk about it, but it's fun.”

While Vaughn seemed excited about the reboot, his busy schedule does mean he could find it difficult to get into the directorial chair.

It is also unclear whether he will also be taking part in the screenwriting, as he did for the first film.

While speaking at Comic Con, Vaughn also spoke about his other film plans, most notably his dedication to the Kingsman franchise.

“We've got to get on with Kingsman 3 because I was joking that Colin [Firth] is going to end up being a portrait on the side while Taron [Egerton] is Arthur. So we are working on that at the moment,” Vaughn said.

Vaughn also said at the moment he is working on a musical project and this will likely take precedent over both the making of Kingsman and Kick-Ass.

“I'm actually going to be doing a musical next year, can't talk about it,” he said of the unnamed project.

“And it's taking me so long to find a musical to do because a musical is only as good as the music, and Elton John's catalogue is pretty hard to beat, so I'm trying to match it, at least, and I think we've nearly got there… it's bats**t crazy, but it's fun.”
