The geeks from Freaks and Geeks reunite nearly 25 years later for new Dungeons & Dragons movie

Director John Francis Daley's character was a big fan of the game

John Francis Daley, Samm Levine and Martin Starr all returned to their geeky routes as they reunited almost 25 years after Freaks and Geeks in honour of the new Dungeons and Dragons movie.

The trio were known to be fans of the role-playing game in the '90s series, but viewers probably didn't realise at the time just how into the game they were. Because if this new clip is anything to go by, they managed to get so wrapped up in one campaign that they ended up playing it for 23 years.

Daley, Levine and Starr reprised their roles as Sam, Neal and Bill, respectively, just as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is set to hit cinemas this weekend.

Its release comes way after Freaks and Geeks came to an end, but the official Twitter account for the film noted that 'time flies when you play D&D' as it revealed the three characters sat around a table as if they'd never left the set.

As Bill and Neal acknowledge each other's plentiful facial hair, Sam explains he hasn't hit puberty yet before suggesting that someone should make Dungeons & Dragons into a movie.

They quickly brush away the comment as the 'stupidest idea in the world', but away from the set of Freaks and Geeks Sam's non-fictional counterpart, aka Daley, has actually been hard at work co-creating Honor Among Thieves.

Daley directed the new film alongside Jonathan Goldstein, with Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant among those who appear in the film.

Those who are excited to see the role-playing game come to life might actually have Freaks and Geeks creator Paul Feig to thank, because Daley has previously explained to Uproxx that he was first introduced to the game on the show.

“I first discovered it as a teenager on Freaks and Geeks," he said. "My character was supposed to be a big fan of it. So we played a quick campaign with the cast.

"It was my favorite episode, not because of the Dungeons & Dragons component, but because we got to see Jason Segel do a disco dance. Then I picked it back up as an adult about two years before we started on this movie.”

Freaks and Geeks helped launch the careers of many stars we know and love today, with Linda Cardellini, Jason Segel, Busy Philipps, Seth Rogen and James Franco all among those who appeared in the show.
