A woman living in the US has revealed the unbelievable savings she made by flying to Turkey to have a root canal instead of having the procedure stateside.

Delia O’Malley was floored when she was handed a bill by her dentist asking her to cough up $3,099.16 (£2457) for the work she needed, and that sum was after her insurance policy was applied.

O’Malley (@asdeliadoes) shared her story on TikTok, and the post has since racked up nearly half a million likes.

O’Malley captioned her social media post: “My dentist wanted $3,099 for a root canal so I booked a week in Turkey to get it done here! Came to less than $1,200. So I get a root canal and a holiday now!”

Her followers were quick to share their own experiences of travelling abroad to avoid eye-watering health costs in the US.

One person commented: “They quoted me $5500 for a root canal and crown, I already booked my tickets to Mexico.”

Another added: “My family drove my sister and I from Los Angeles to Tijuana, MX for braces because it was the only way we could afford it!”

A third wrote: “I went to Poland to have an implant, with three kids, stayed at a hotel for a week, went shopping and still saved.”

Other social media users pointed out that O’Malley’s bill actually included the cost of a crown and two fillings, although many insisted the bill was astronomical regardless.

“I love how some people are like ‘that’s for more than just a root canal’ as if that makes the bill less insane,” quipped one TikToker.

Many more of O’Malley’s followers took the opportunity to slam the US’ cut-throat healthcare system.

Her round-trip cost her $1,167 (£925) in total.

“Tell me you are from the US without telling me you are from the US,” penned one person.

“America is so profit driven it’s sad that people go bankrupt trying not to die,” added another.

Last year, the US came last on a ranking of healthcare systems in the eleven wealthiest countries in the world.

The US was placed bottom despite spending 17 percent of its gross domestic product on healthcare, which is ‘far above’ the other ten countries, The Guardian reported at the time.
