The world’s oldest man has passed away less than one month before celebrating his 113th birthday.

Saturnino de la Fuente García, from Spain, achieved the Guinness World Record for being the oldest living male in September 2021, when he was recorded as being exactly 112 years and 211 days old.

Born on February 11, 1909, Saturnino was a matter of weeks away from his next birthday when Guinness World Records shared news of his death on Tuesday, January 18.

The elderly man is described as having lived a ‘kind and long life’ without ‘hurting anyone’ – a trait Saturnino claimed to be the secret to his longevity.

He married his partner Antonina Barrio Gutiérrez in 1933 and welcomed seven daughters, 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren throughout his life, during which he also established a flourishing shoemaker business.

Saturnino managed to avoid being enlisted into the 1936 Spanish Civil war thanks to his short height of 4.92 feet, and went on to create boots for the army and become a famous artisan in the area.

A longtime football fan, Saturnino was remembered by his local club Cultural y Deportivo Leonesa following the news of his death, with a tweet which read: ‘We’re saddened by the death of Saturnino de la Fuente, the oldest man in the world, and will remember him with great affection.’

The team added: ‘We share the pain of his loss and we would like to express our condolences to his family and friends.’

Garcia is set to be buried at a local cemetery in León.
