Scarlett Johansson makes rare comments about her very brief marriage to Ryan Reynolds

Yes, they were really a thing

It may seem pretty bizarre to think now, but Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson were once married. Really.

Back in the noughties, the Hollywood stars tied the knot, though it didn't last long, with the pair going their separate ways a couple of years later in 2011.

Since then, both actors have gone one to marry again, with Reynolds getting hitched to Gossip Girl star Blake Lively a year later, and Johansson marrying twice more, Romain Dauriac in 2014 and Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost in 2020.

And as you might expect, like anyone in a new relationship, they've both kept fairly tight-lipped about their very brief marriage.

However, the topic did come up during Johansson's appearance on Gwyneth Paltrow's 'Goop' podcast.

With the conversation moving onto partners and marriage, Paltrow said she couldn't believe she used to be with the Deadpool actor.

"Oh that's right, because I forgot that you were married to Ryan Reynolds!" Paltrow said.

Adding: "Goals!"

Laughing, Johansson clarified that it was a short-lived romance.

"We weren’t married very long, but we were when I first met you, for Iron Man [2] or whatever,” the 38-year-old said.

Paltrow went on: "We love a good Ryan Reynolds in our house."

Laughing in agreement, Johansson said: “He’s a good guy.”

The pair first tied the knot in September 2008 at a private ceremony and in December 2010, they announced their split in a joint statement.

Blake Lively did not enjoy watching Reynolds get mashed potato eaten out of his butt, unsurprisingly.

“After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we’ve decided to end our marriage,” it read.

"We entered our relationship with love and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated."

One positive to come out of their divorce, though, for Johansson at least, is that she never had to watch her husband get mashed potato eaten out of his butthole. That spectacle was left for Lively to enjoy.

Well, kind of, I mean, movies are real, right?

During an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon a few years ago, the actor explained why once being apart from her husband on Father's Day was pretty awks.

"We were not together on Father's Day, it was the first day we weren't together," Lively recalled.

"I was on the plane with our daughter James. It's kind of torture these days because I'm on a plane and everywhere I look, everyone's watching my husband in a sex montage.

"Throughout the holidays... with another woman!

"Because everyone wants to watch Deadpool on the plane. Everyone."

Adding: "But like for 14 hours watching your husband having mashed potatoes eaten out of his bum hole is lovely."
