AI reveals 'real' face of Jesus Christ based on the Shroud of Turin

Artificial intelligence used the Shroud of Turin to create the depiction of Jesus Christ

Artificial intelligence has proven that its capable of doing some amazing things, including revealing what Jesus could have really looked like.

While it's capable of doing some amazing things, AI doesn't come without it's controversies.

For example, someone asked AI to create what's supposed to be the 'perfect' man and woman (if there's such a thing), but not everyone was impressed with the results.

Elsewhere, AI created what the average person from each US state apparently looks like and the results were downright weird.

More recently, AI was tasked with creating what Jesus really looked like after ongoing debates about the religious figure and his appearance.

To create the image, which was done via Midjourney, artificial intelligence used the Shroud of Turin.

What is the Shroud of Turin?

The Shroud of Turin is a piece of linen that's believed to have been the burial garment of Jesus when he died on April 3, AD 33.

It has been preserved since 1578 in the royal chapel of the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista in Turin, Italy, says Britannica.

People believe that the cloth bears a faint image of the front and back of a man (the man being Jesus). One of part of it in particular appears to show the imprint of a face, which has since been digitally processed to reveal a clearer image.

What did AI do?

An AI site called Midjourney was asked to generate a realistic image of Jesus Christ from the faint image on the cloth by the Daily Express.

The image shows a man with hair which reaches just below his shoulders along with a beard and moustache — he basically just looks like exactly how most images of Jesus have ever been presented in history.

However, the man also has what seems to be cuts on his face and body, which could signal Christ's crucifixion.

What have experts said about Jesus' appearance?

Some historians have argued that AI depictions of Jesus like the one created by Midjourney are inaccurate.

One thing in particular is his skin tone, which some say would have been dark.

Speaking on this, Dr Meredith Warren, senior lecturer on Biblical and religious studies at Sheffield University, told MailOnline: "Jesus would have had brown skin, brown eyes, like the local population.

"He died before he was 40. He wasn't rich and would have spent a lot of time outdoors, so some lines on that face, probably. His hands and feet were probably calloused and rough."
