In a statement on Wednesday the Pentagon said they had killed an official who had attempted to have Trump killed.

The US military has killed an Iranian official who was responsible for an alleged assassination plot against Donald Trump, according to the Pentagon.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth did not give details regarding the supposed assassination attempt nor named the official.

Speaking to reporters, he did note that the official was not the focus of the war however praised this news.

He said: “The leader of the unit who attempted to assassinate President Trump has been hunted down and killed. Iran tried to kill President Trump and President Trump got the last laugh.

“While that was not the focus of the effort by any stretch of the imagination - in fact, never raised by the President or anybody else - I ensured, and others ensured, that those who were responsible for that were eventually part of the target list.”

Back in 2024, the US Justice Department charged an Iranian man in connection with an alleged assassination plot that was allegedly ordered by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.

However, it is not clear whether this is the attempt that Hegseth was referring to.

Tehran has denied any accusations that it has targeted Trump or any other US officials.

While the US has confirmed the death of key Iranian’s, the US has already lost four service personal since the war began on February 28 when the US and Israel began bombing Iran.

Following the strikes, Iran retaliated and fired off missiles and drone attacks to neighboring countries, targeting US bases.

Trump has issued a statement of mourning regarding the four deceased individuals, while also noting more will likely follow.

The four individuals who were killed have been named as US Army Reserve soldiers and have identified by the US military as Capt Cody Khork, 35, Sgt Noah Tietjens, 42, Sgt Nicole Amor, 39, and Sgt Declan Coady, 20.

Trump did note that the US is already ahead of its own schedule regarding the missions it wants to carry out in Iran.

He said: “In their memory we continue this mission with ferocious, unyielding resolve to crush the threat this terrorist regime imposes on American people.”

He went on to add that the US is already ‘substantially ahead’ of its time projections. Trump explained that they projected four-five weeks at the beginning, but adds they have "capability to go far longer".
