'Wild' way Travis Kelce first asked out Taylor Swift as pair announce engagement

Shortly before announcing their engagement, Taylor Swift revealed how Travis Kelce came to ask her on a date.

Kelce and Swift have been in a relationship since 2023, which fans quickly worked out after spotting the 'Shake It Off' singer at a series of Kansas City Chiefs games.

The Chiefs home ground is the Arrowhead Stadium — a venue that Swift performed at on July 7 and 8 two years ago.

Kelce attended the 2023 concert on one of the nights she performed and he hoped to shoot his shot with Swift while he was there.

His plan was to get down to Swift's dressing room and give her a friendship bracelet (a famous part of her tour and her fans) with his number on it.

Kelce didn't manage to meet the music superstar, however, and discussed the matter on his New Heights podcast that he hosts with his brother Jason Kelce.

Discussing how he found the concert, the younger of the Kelce brothers shared: "Well, I was disappointed that she doesn't talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings. So I was a little butthurt that I didn't get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her."

Kelce continued: "If you're up on Taylor Swift concerts there are friendship bracelets and I received a bunch of them being there, but I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it."

When his brother asked him to specify whether he meant his jersey number 87 or his cellphone number, the Chiefs player cheekily replied: "You know which one."

Fast forward to 2025 and Swift featured on the Kelce brothers' podcast and recalled the moment she got wind of what her now-fiancé said about wanting to give her his number.

"It was such a wild, romantic gesture to just be like, 'I want to date you,'" Swift said, while also noting that Kelce 'never did any proper logistical planning' to actually meet her at Arrowhead, such as reach out to her management team.

"[He thought] because he knows the elevator lady, that he could talk to her about just getting down to my dressing room," Swift quipped. "That’s how it works in 1973!"

But Kelce's comments on his podcast left her intrigued.

She said: "This felt more like I was in an 80s John Hughes movie and he was just standing outside of my window with a boombox being like, 'I want to date you! Do you want to go on a date with me? I made you a friendship bracelet.'

"I was like, if this guy isn’t crazy – which is a big if – this is sort of what I’ve been writing songs about wanting to happen to me since I was a teenager."

Evidently, Kelce's confidence paid off as he's now engaged to Swift having recently popped the question to her.

The announced their happy news on Instagram on August 26.
