Gallup has revealed it's shutting down its tracking of its presidential approval ratings, the news following in the wake of Donald Trump's rating dropping.

Gallup Inc. is one of the most renowned American global analytics and advisory firms for tracking US public opinion.

For over 80 years, it's been tracking approval ratings for the presidents of the United States, including the likes of Donald Trump.

The company recently tracked his approval rating dropping from 47 percent in February 2025 to 36 percent in its latest poll in December. However, it has since announced its tracking of 'Presidential Approval Ratings [for] Donald Trump' is closing.

The tracking of the ratings has been ongoing for a staggering 88 years, so why is the analytics company suddenly shutting it down?

Well, some social media users have shared their theories online.

Social media users' theories

One X user said: "*Trump approval rating drops to 29 percent* *Approval stops being measured*

"Don’t think I need to call the Scooby gang to solve this mystery."

"After nearly 9 decades of tracking presidential approval ratings, Gallup has decided to end their poll measuring following threats from the orange felon after showing his historically low approval ratings. This is what cowardice and bending the knee to a tyrant looks like," another theorized.

And a third wrote: "Btw, Gallup’s last report of Trump’s approval rating was among the lowest rating for President ever recorded in its history. Now, after 88 years, they’re not measuring it anymore. Nothing suspicious going on here I’m sure."

But what has Gallup actually said about the move?

What Gallup has said

In a statement shared with The Post, Gallup spokesperson Justin McCarthy said the 'context around these measures has changed'.

"They are now widely produced, aggregated and interpreted, and no longer represent an area where Gallup can make its most distinctive contribution," he added.

A spokesperson for the agency also added, as quoted by The Hill, that the change 'is part of a broader, ongoing effort to align all of Gallup's public work with its mission' and 'is a strategic shift solely based on Gallup's research goals and priorities'.

They resolved: "Our commitment is to long-term, methodologically sound research on issues and conditions that shape people’s lives. That work will continue through the Gallup Poll Social Series, the Gallup Quarterly Business Review, the World Poll, and our portfolio of U.S. and global research."

"[...] We look forward to continuing to offer independent research that adheres to the highest standards of social science."

UNILAD has contacted Gallup for further comment.
