Cruise ship experts have warned that travelers risk putting other people’s lives in danger if they do this one thing in their cabin rooms.

When it comes to going on a cruise ship, it should be a brilliant and exhilarating experience for everyone involved, but there are still rules that are crucial to follow.

While normal travel and vacation etiquette are expected, some cruise ship experts have reiterated not bringing this one piece of equipment and using it in your cabin, even though you might normally take it with you on holiday in a hotel.

Cruise ship expert Jayson Judson regularly posts on TikTok the ins and outs of cruise ship travel, including the big do’s and don’ts.

In one video, he argued that guests should avoid bringing this certain travel item, as it could ultimately prove a safety and health risk - two things that are paramount when out at sea and away from any form of close assistance.

Judson said people should not use surge protector power cords in their rooms.

Explaining the reasoning behind the point, he said: “They mess with the ship’s electrical system. Instead use a cruise-approved extension cord.”

Lifestyle Parade report Melissa Cabey also called herself a cruise ship expert following years of traveling on cruise ships as an entertainer and also commented on the topic.

Reiterating Judson’s points, in a report, she wrote: “[Surge protector power cords] can cause issues with the ship’s electrical system–so much so that it could blow out the electrical sockets in your cabin.

She added: “[The cords] generate heat, which poses a fire risk on cruise ships. As a crew member, I was always taught in safety training that fire is the number one risk onboard a cruise ship.

“Electricity doesn’t work how it works on land, and depending on many different factors, a fire could easily be started by things like surge protected power cords.”

She also noted that while many cruise lines have these as a forbidden item, they can occasionally be missed by security and used by passengers who are unaware of the rule.

She noted that the need for an extension cord is very much a genuine one for passengers, as some rooms come with a limited amount of outlets and this can make things tricky when you are with your family.

But with that said, it is ultimately safer to buy a cruise-safe extension cord.
