Donald Trump to break World Cup Final tradition after FIFA gives green light

Football fans can expect to experience something that’s never happened before in the history of FIFA at the World Cup final, and it’s breaking a major rule for all involved.

Donald Trump is allegedly set to attend and once there, he's not exactly going to sit back and just watch.

In a move that was seemingly correctly predicted by the UK's Piers Morgan and talkSPORT's Simon Jordan, the 80-year-old is apparently going to be involved at the final.

But it's exactly how he's involved that could be controversial.

At the World Cup Final at the MetLife Stadium, New York, on July 19, the POTUS has been given the green light to become part of the tournament, with talkSPORT reporting that FIFA president Gianni Infantino has been the leading man to say yes to this move.

The reports say FIFA has given Trump the go-ahead to break presentation protocol by handing the World Cup trophy directly to the winning captain.

According to the usual protocol, the trophy is supposed to remain on a stand and be carried by a player from the winning team and onto a celebration podium.

Then, pictures will be taken.

However, per the outlet, Trump now officially has full license to present the World Cup trophy in any way he wants to.

Following the confirmation of Trump's attendance at the final, Infantino said: "We will be together with the president, enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together. We are together all the time."

While it might seem unorthodox that Trump is set to take on handing the victors their well-earned trophy at the final, it's not the first time others have done so.

Infantino has recently been doing the same at World Cups, as well as former FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, and other heads of state have also taken on the role too.

At Qatar 2022 and Russia 2018, Infantino presented the trophy.

King Juan Carlos of Spain also gave the World Cup to Italy in 1982, and Queen Elizabeth II handed it to England in 1966.

While people sit and mull this new detail over about Trump, there's another big change that has people heated on social media.

Ahead of the final, FIFA announced a closing ceremony featuring the likes of Robbie Williams, Nicole Scherzinger, IShowSpeed and Tom Cruise.

But that isn't an issue.

What has seen some get upset is the fact that Jennifer Hudson is supposed to perform the US national anthem before kick-off.

One fan questioned the move, writing: “Why should the US national anthem be played? And don’t give me the 'because they’re the host nation' argument. I can’t remember a single World Cup where the host country’s anthem was played before the final unless the host nation was actually one of the finalists. This World Cup has been more politicised than ever. Trump will present the trophy, and for the first time the US national anthem will be played despite the United States not even being one of the finalists. It’s all becoming pretty disgusting."

Where is the next World Cup?

Morocco, Portugal and Spain will co-host the FIFA World Cup in 2030, marking the football tournament’s 100th anniversary.

It’s set to run from 8 June 2030 to 21 July 2030, making it the longest World Cup in history at 44 days.

FIFA also announced that three separate matches will take place in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, as a tribute to the first-ever World Cup back in 1930.
