There's a wild prediction floating around of what could happen if Donald Trump decides to run for president again in 2028, and it doesn't end well.

It's been almost 12 months since Trump returned to the White House for a second time as President of the United States, which means we have another three years of him yet.

However, Americans are reportedly already thinking about the 2028 presidential election, according to a new CNN-SSRS poll taken earlier this month.

Though two-thirds of participants said they didn't have a specific person in mind they'd like to see run for president, many Republicans (11 per cent) said they wanted Vice President JD Vance to make a bid, while 2 per cent tipped Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

A meagre one per cent also picked Trump, who is actually unable to run again due to the 22nd Amendment.

Still, that hasn't stopped some people from sharing their predictions - and for Trump himself to tease a few times that he would like to run again, what with offering $50 'Trump 2028' hats already.

On X (formerly Twitter), a user shared his prediction after a recent poll indicated that Vance stands as 'the clear favorite' to win.

"My prediction of how this goes: Trump will want to run for a third term, nobody in the Republican Party supports him, they want JD Vance to run," reporter Thomas van Linge wrote.

"Trump doesn't listen at first but eventually has no choice but not to run."

His prediction continued: "Trump becomes bitter and won't endorse Vance, in fact might actually tell people not to vote for him."

As a result, "Vance looses miserably."

The prediction has certainly caused a stir amongst many on social media, with some appearing to agree with the vision.

"As a Republican, I think this is probably spot on, except I think Vance will win anyway," read one comment, with another echoed: "I don’t know who you are or what you’re doing in my timeline, but I like the way you think!"

A third weighed in: "Bookmark this tweet, I reckon it’ll be prophetic."

Earlier this month, Trump admitted he has a 'little more than three years left' of his term after posting a 'Trump 2028' sign.

The 22nd Amendment prohibits anyone from serving more than two terms as US president. But despite apparently knowing his time in the Oval Office is ticking away, Trump has often flirted with the idea of running for a third term.

When asked by a reporter if he'd be willing to 'challenge' the prohibition in court to run again, the POTUS said: "I haven’t really thought about it. We have some very good people, as you know, but I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had."

The 'good people' he said were Vance and Rubio, but added: "I’m not sure if anybody would run again. I think if they ever formed a group, it would be unstoppable, I do. I really believe that. I would love to do it. I have my best numbers ever.”

He then said he would 'be allowed' to circumvent the 22nd Amendment, which could play out if he returned to the White House as Vice President and asked the elected POTUS to resign so he could assume the presidency.

However, this is subject to a clause under the 12th Amendment, which states: "No person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.”

Still, Trump said even if he could, he wouldn't want to, adding: "I would rule that out because it's too cute. I think the people wouldn't like that. It's too cute. It wouldn't be right."
