Stores are celebrating National Donut Day today (3 June) by giving away free donuts and discounted treats.

National Donut Day, which is held annually on the first Friday in June, was originally created by the Salvation Army in 1938 to celebrate the women who served donuts to soldiers during the First World War.

Here are some of the stores offering sweet treats in honour of National Donut Day – at this point, we should specify it's in the US only, but don't despair, the UK is holding National Donut WEEK on 10 July.

At Dunkin' Donuts, customers can earn themselves a free classic donut when purchasing any beverage.

Krispy Kreme has joined the celebrations by giving customers any donut of their choice, completely free without any purchase necessary.

Customers can also purchase an original glazed donut for $1 if they purchase a dozen or 16 mini donuts.

Also on offer is the chance to purchase a Krispy Kreme 'Eat Doughnuts' hat for 50% off.

All National Donut Day customers will be given a coupon to receive a Krispy Kreme mystery glaze donut on 10 June.

Duck Donuts is offering its customers one free plain, cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar donut.

Canadian coffee powerhouse Tim Hortons is offering a 'buy one get one free' donut deal for customers who register with Tim Rewards and buy a donut through the app or online.

The offer is running from 30 May to 5 June and is valid on a wide selection of signature donuts, from Chocolate Glazed to Boston Cream, Honey Cruller and more.

Popular convenience store 7-Eleven will be offering a buy one get one free deal to its reward members at all 7-Eleven, Speedway and Stripe stores.

The offers do not end there, with The Dapper Doughnut giving away a box of powdered and cinnamon doughnuts with any purchase.

Honey Dew Donuts is giving away a free coffee with any purchase every Thursday in June. To take advantage of this deal, customers just need to download the app.
