Scream VI breaks box office record and becomes biggest movie in the franchise

After all these years, it seems like Ghostface can still get people into the cinema.

The sixth film in the Scream franchise has broken a box office record.

While audiences of other major film franchises might get bored by this time, it appears Ghostface is able to get bums on seats in a massive way.

Scream VI dropped into cinemas last week and the team behind the film were desperately hoping it would best the result Scream V scored last year.

The fifth entry to the saga earned $138 million at the worldwide box office, which is certainly nothing to cry about.

But it was the second worst-performing movie in the franchise after Scream IV, which took in $95 million in 2011.

Hoping to not add to the declining trend, it seems this newest instalment has hit a new nerve with fans in the best way possible.

It's pulled in a whopping $44.5 million at the domestic box office and $67.1 million at the worldwide box office.

That makes Scream VI the biggest opening weekend result in the Scream movie franchise to date.

The previous box office record holder was Scream III, which scored $34 million on its opening weekend.

Sure, there are a lot more people on the planet now than when the third instalment dropped back in 2000, but it's still impressive to see viewers are still lapping up the story.

The film holds an impressive 92 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Hollywood Reporter said 71 per cent of cinema goers for Scream VI were aged between 18 and 34, with the 18 to 24 age group making up the biggest slice.

It was also fairly split between the sexes, with 51 per cent male and 49 per cent female.

Scream VI was so strong that it managed to beat the likes of Creed III, the Adam Driver dinosaur epic 65 and Champions, according to Variety.

Courteney Cox is back as Gale Weathers for Scream VI and is the only actor to have made it through every single film so far in the franchise.

Weathers is joined by fellow survivors Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere), Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega).

Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and her twin brother Chad (Mason Gooding) are also given another shot to come face-to-mask with Ghostface.

No Scream film would be complete without Ghostface, but the character returned not 'like any other Ghostface' who has come before as they're armed not only with knives but also a gun this time too.

Scream VI is now in cinemas.
