The dog who played Seven in The Walking Dead has died as co-stars pay tribute to the shows ‘best boy’.

The Belgian Malinois starred as Daryl Dixon’s sidekick, simply known as Dog in the show.

The official Walking Dead also reacted to the news on their social media, writing: "All dogs must go heaven. Rest in Peace, Seven."

Just after it was announced, Norman Reedus who played Daryl, also posted several pictures of himself with the fury companion on his Instagram stories, captioned: “Gonna miss you Seven.”

He also said the dog was ‘the best TV buddy ever’.

Fellow cast members expressed their love for Seven in the comments, including the likes of Lynn Collins who played Leah in the series, Khary Payton who starred as Ezekiel, and Sabrina Gennarino, whose character was Tamiel.

Angela Kang, who worked as a runner on the final three seasons of The Walking Dead, shared the announcement from the show's official account on her Instagram stories and added, "RIP Seven," alongside a crying face emoji.

She noted in 2018 that Reedus had helped out with picking the show’s canine star.

Seven was introduced to the show in the seventh episode of Season 9, and fans instantly fell in love with him.

He gained an instant following, and fans even launched a petition to protect Daryl's dog shortly after he arrived on the scene.

Seven appeared in over 25 episodes in total - right the way through to the series finale of The Walking Dead that aired in 2022.

Speaking to ComicBook.com about working with the canine star in 2018, Reedus said: “We just did a scene the other day that ended up being the opposite of what it was supposed to be because the dog just wanted to do something else, and it came out so much better.

“He’ll probably be running the show. It’s great! I love it. He loves me, too.

“I think he’s the smartest cast member we got.”

Since The Walking Dead came to an end in 2022, there have been numerous spin-off series.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, was released, and has a second season titled The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol coming up.

There is also The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.
