Mia Goth says Oscars don't take horror seriously and a 'change is necessary'

Mia Goth says Oscars don't take horror seriously and a 'change is necessary'

The nominees do offer up a bit of variety in genre but notably, none of them fall into the genre of horror.

Suspiria actor Mia Goth has claimed 'change is necessary' when it comes to better embracing the horror genre at the Oscars.

The English actor, who is known for her roles in the horror movie Pearl and upcoming science fiction horror Infinity Pool, addressed the movies that are recognised at the Academy Awards just as the 2023 list of nominees has been revealed.

Among the contenders for Best Picture are musical biopic Elvis, adventure/sci-fi movie Everything Everywhere All At Once, Steven Spielberg's drama The Fabelmans and the action movie Top Gun: Maverick.

Goth addressed the lack of horror film recognition, particularly in the performance categories, as she spoke to IndieWire at Sundance film festival and expressed belief the awards are 'very political'.

“I think that it’s very political and that it’s not entirely based on the quality of a project per se,” she said of the lack of genre diversity.

"I think there’s a lot going on there, a lot of cooks in the kitchen when it comes to nominations and categories that are recognised. Maybe I shouldn’t say that either but I think that’s true. I think a lot of people know that. I don’t know why.”

Goth went on to claim that 'a change is necessary', adding: "A shift should take place, really. If they wanted to engage with the wider public, I think it would be of benefit, really.”

Film fans have previously criticised the decision to leave certain horror films out of Oscars nominations, for example with Toni Collette's chilling performance in Hereditary, which earned her a nomination at the Critics Choice Awards.

Collette was not recognised at the Oscars for her performance in Hereditary.

Fans have also been shocked at the absence of Jordan Peele's 2022 Horror/Sci-fi movie NOPE in this year's nominees, with many taking to Twitter to vent their frustrations.

"I know I should've accepted the fact that NOPE would get no oscar nominations this year but I think everyone can agree that it deserved so much more," one wrote.

Another disgruntled Twitter user wrote: "Top Gun got an oscar best picture nomination but Nope got none? Bones and All? Mia Goth? yet another year of the oscars pretending the horror genre doesn’t exist."

Most categories at the Oscars are nominated by the members of the corresponding branch, for example with actors nominating actors, though all voting members are able to have their say when it comes to selecting the nominees for Best Picture.

This year's Academy Awards are set to take place on 13 March.
