Harry Potter TV series with all new cast officially ordered by HBO Max

HBO Max has finally ordered a Harry Potter TV series over two years after news of planned series came to light

Potterheads, it's time to start packing as we're all heading back to Hogwarts soon.

HBO Max has officially ordered a Harry Potter TV series - with a brand new cast - after news of its development was revealed back in January 2021.

News of the J.K. Rowling creation becoming a TV series first leaked on 3 April, but it was made official on Wednesday (12 April) at the Warner Bros. Discovery presentation.

The series is planned to last for almost a decade as each season of the show will be based on one of Rowling’s seven Harry Potter books.

The TV show will have a brand new cast.

The number of episodes per season - and release window - has yet to be confirmed although the streaming service shared a teaser clip as part of their announcement.

News of the series will probably get a mixed reaction from fans as the original cast are considered the perfect and only choices for the roles.

With that said, the Wizarding World continues to be a huge success so it should come as no surprise that the Harry Potter universe is now making its way to the small screen.

Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content, explained: “We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way.

Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

J.K. Rowling will executive produce the TV adaptation.

HBO Max, which will soon rebrand to just ‘Max’ soon, will produce the film in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.

Despite the controversy surrounding her ongoing comments regarding transgender people, Rowling will also executive produce the series along with Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts. David Heyman is currently in talks to executive produce the show.

Rowling said she’s looking forward to exploring the ‘depth and detail’ of her books in a 'long form television series'.

In a statement released along with the series announcement, the best-selling author said: “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television."
