Carl from Pixar’s heartwarming tale Up will return for a brand new adventure and fans won’t have to wait long to see it.

The elderly adventurer, who embarked on a mind-blowing trip to South America in his house with the help of thousands balloons, will be back on the big screen along with his canine pal, Dug.

The animated companions are starring in a brand new short film which will debut this month.

The Pixar short will focus on Carl (Ed Asner) as he attempts to prepare for a date with the help of Dug (Bob Peterson), asking his faithful friend for his advice on whether the heart-shaped chocolates he bought are ‘fun’.

Dug replies: “Fun is digging in the dirt and destroying your flowers!”

The hyperactive pooch also seems to be coaching Carl on how to date, including dancing lessons and advice.

As fans will recall, the opening of Up is one of the saddest movie segments ever made.

Dug helps Carl prepare for a date in an upcoming short.

We get to see Carl and Ellie's romance blossom over the years as they get married, build their life together, struggle to have a child, find their happiness and grow old together.

In a heart-wrenching twist, Ellie dies and leaves Carl as a devastated and lonely widower.

Ed Asner, who portrayed Carl in the 2009 film, passed away in August 2021.

However, Bob Peterson confirmed in December that Asner recorded new lines for Carl’s Date before his death.

“A new episode of Dug Days is on its way in 2023! It's called ‘Carl's Date,’ and we are so excited to share it with you all,” he tweeted.

Carl's Date will accompany the new Pixar film Elemental.

“And YES the great ED ASNER recorded new lines for this episode before he passed. He did an amazing job.”

Carl’s Date is therefore Asner’s final performance as Carl. The short will be part of the Dug Days series, which already has five episodes, and explores the life of the hilarious and happy golden retriever and his daily adventures.

Carl's Date will be released alongside Pixar's new film Elemental.

The romantic comedy-drama feature length film will is in a world inhabited by anthropomorphic elements of nature.

Fire element Ember Lumen (Leah Lewis) and water element Wade Ripple (Mamoudou Athie) meet and fall in love and although the two cannot touch each other, they must attempt to make their relationship work.

Romance is clearly in the air over at Pixar.

Both Elemental and Carl's Date will be released in theatres on June 16.
