The release date for Cobra Kai's fifth season has been announced - and it's coming sooner than you think.

Based on The Karate Kid, the show follows Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) three decades years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament.

For the past few years, each new chapter of the Cobra Kai story has landed on New Year's Day. However, the highly-anticipated fifth season will arrive on Netflix far sooner than expected.

Check out a new teaser and the release date for Cobra Kai season five below:

That's right: Cobra Kai is returning to Netflix on 9 September, nearly four months earlier than originally planned.

The teaser trailer features Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith) telling Daniel, "You're playing with fire, Danny boy" after John Kreese (Martin Kove) was put behind bars, with the intention of expanding the dojo across the State Valley.

Tory (Peyton List) and Kyler (Joe Seo) will return to represent Cobra Kai, while Robby (Tanner Buchanan) is set to be caught between either side as he reconnects with his dad.

While Daniel and Johnny managed to bury the hatchet at the end of season four, the next chapter will explore new tensions between the frenemies.

Speaking to TV Line, co-showrunner Jon Hurwitz said: "Ever since that All Valley Tournament in high school where Daniel had the victory over Johnny, he's felt a little less than.

"He's felt like second best or below that, and then 30-some-odd years of life continued to prove that out as he found himself struggling with having odd jobs, a dysfunctional relationship with his son and no love in his life.

"Meanwhile, looking at billboards and hearing commercials with his old high school rival who's a massive success, he can't help but feel jealous or less than Daniel in certain ways."

New tensions will emerge between Daniel and Johnny.

"Even though the two of them have buried the hatchet, in a sense, and they're working together, it's only natural.

"When Daniel starts making a connection with Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) - who is one of the most important relationships in Johnny's life and is a surrogate son, of sorts - Johnny starts feeling like this lifetime rival of his is potentially a new, better role model that Miguel is turning to instead of him."

Fans shouldn't expect some sort of finality from the fifth season. "There are quite a bit of storylines that start spinning very fast and very aggressively as we enter next season," the showrunner also said.

Cobra Kai's fifth season will hit Netflix on 9 September.
