Whoopi Goldberg has came forward to defend Jo Koy’s Golden Globes hosting job.

The Golden Globes have since come and gone - with the expected wins going to Oppenheimer, Succession, Barbie and Beef.

But unlike the normal conversation that follows after award ceremonies about who should have won what, the internet had a lot of opinions about how the host Jo Koy did - and it wasn't a very favourable reaction.

During Monday’s episode The View, Whoopi Goldberg defended Koy and insisted that hosting gigs can be 'brutal'. Here's what she had to say:

“So last night, apparently were the Golden Globes,” Goldberg said.

“The usual star-studded audience, champagne flowing but for the first time standup comedian Jo Koy took on the hosting duties and it was a rough room for him.”

One of his most memorable flops during the evening is him reacting to one of his jokes bombing.

"Some [jokes] I wrote, some other people wrote... yo, I got the gig 10 days ago, you want a perfect monologue?," he asked.

"Yo, shut up. You're kidding me right? Slow down. I wrote some of these, and they're the ones you're laughing at."

Whoopi Goldberg defended Koy and insisted he is funny.

Goldberg said that hosting gigs like that can be 'just brutal', adding: "If you do not know the room, if you have not been in these rooms before and you are sort of thrust out there it is hit or miss."

She went on to say: “Now I love Jo Koy to me he makes just crazy because he is funny. I don’t know whether it was the room or whether it was the jokes but I didn’t get to see it.

“But I do know that he is as good as it gets when it comes to standup. It is not an easy gig."

The Color Purple star then said that she'd probably bombed a couple herself at some point, adding: "Any of the reviews of the gigs that I have had, where they have just wished me into the corn field, die on the vine."

Many of the other hosts also commented how much they all liked Koy - with Sara Haines saying: "I think that he's such an inherently nice person that doing more of a roast is not natural for him.”

It wasn't just viewers at home that didn't receive the comedian's jokes very well - but some of the celebrities also didn't seem pleased.

Selena Gomez had a pretty memorable reaction to Koy's opening monologue, while Taylor Swift gave a unimpressed reception to his joke directed at her.

Koy later responded to Swift's reaction when being interviewed by Entertainment Tonight at the event's afterparty.

He said: "Aww, man, it was cute. I was just saying it was cute.

"I was just saying it's less cutaways, that's all."
