Golden Globes viewers have been left cringing over Taylor Swift's horrendously awkward reaction to a joke aimed at her by the host.

Comedian Jo Koy took to the stage to host the awards ceremony yesterday (January 7), where he attempted to warm up the crowd by throwing out some jokes at the start of the night.

Koy's monologue was touch-and-go at times as he made reference to the size of Saltburn star Barry Keoghan's penis and the use of the diabetes drug Ozempic, which resulted in mixed responses from the crowd.

However, there was one quip that clearly did not sit well with its target as Koy turned his attention to Swift.

The singer appeared at the awards show after receiving her fifth Golden Globe nomination, this year in a new category which honors the cinematic and box office achievements of films.

Swift's movie, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, earned a nomination alongside some of the year's biggest Hollywood releases, including Barbie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part One, Oppenheimer and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

During his speech, Koy reminded the crowd that the Golden Globes were being aired 'after a football double header'.

He used the schedule to make a connection to Swift's ongoing romance with Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, who she has been supporting at games for the last few months.

Koy joked: "The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL - on the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift. I swear, there’s just more to go to."

While the joke earned a few laughs from the crowd, a sharp cut to a shot of Swift made clear she wasn't joining in.

The singer pursed her lips as she stared, unimpressed, towards Koy, before taking a telling sip of her drink.

Koy appeared to recognize the joke didn't go down quite as well as he'd hoped as he trailed off towards the end of it, before adding: "Sorry about that."

His apology hasn't been enough to stop Swifties rushing to the singer's defense, though, as viewers flooded X to comment on the scene.

"Taylor did not like that joke. This host is giving me second-hand embarrassment & this is just awkward," one fan wrote, while another commented: "Now im not the biggest taylor swift fan, but that golden globes 'joke' was the most awkward joke i think ive ever seen [sic]."

Some people did stick up for Koy, though they still admitted the joke didn't land quite as well as he might have hoped.

"The Taylor joke was awkward - it wasn't offensive," they wrote. "We don't need to overreact. They did not mention Travis or her personal life. Relax a bit, please."

Unfortunately Swift wasn't able to get over the joke with the celebration of a win, either, as the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement ultimately went to Barbie.
