People have heavily condemned Katy Perry after she revealed she's voting for a billionaire to be mayor who is known to have financially supported anti-abortionists.

On Tuesday (8 November), the 'I Kissed A Girl' singer uploaded a smiling selfie alongside a ballot machine revealing her vote for the 2022 Los Angeles City General Municipal Mayoral Elections.

Despite Perry's smiling face and raised thumb, many of her fans have been left outraged by her voting decision.

And unfortunately, even though the singer's turned off the comments on the post, that hasn't stopped her followers from taking to Twitter in their fury over her endorsing of an anti-abortionist billionaire.

Perry's Instagram picture reveals she voted for American businessman Rick Caruso.

Perry captioned the image: "I am voting for a myriad of reasons (see the news) but in particular because Los Angeles is a hot mess atm. #letsgocaruso #yestomeasure28 #yestomeasure1 #doyoubutjustuseyourvoteok."

Alas, her 'myriad of reasons' hasn't convinced all of her fans, who oppose Republican-turned-Democrat Caruso not only for his billionaire status, but also because he financially endorses anti-abortionist Republicans and religious organisations.

Katy Perry has faced severe backlash over her voting choices for the LA mayoral election.

While Perry is safe from negative comments on her Instagram post, her fans haven't been held back on Twitter.

One user wrote: "For a woman who made the beginning of her career about kissing a girl, Katy Perry sure did just s**t all over them with her vote.

"This is why it’s always important to follow the money. Millionaires voting for billionaires that say they are pro-choice but donate or accept money from and to anti- woman groups. Rick Caruso was an I turned to R and now D, but donates fascist."

"I don't wanna see katy perry [...] and every other celebrity who voted for that candidate crying online about reproductive rights and lgbt rights being taken away when they broadcasted to the world that they're voting for a candidate against those rights," another said.

A third noted the irony of Perry having previously posted a pro-choice video only to now vote for Caruso: "Katy perry tweeting out a pro-choice video while voting for rick caruso would be objectively hilarious if it wasn’t painfully dumb."

Fans clearly aren't impressed with the singer's political choices.

A final commented on Perry's pro-choice post: "You are so disappointing. You voted for someone who donated to anti-choice organizations and will ultimately hurt so many people you previously professed to care about.

"And because you're wealthy, you won't ever feel the negative effects of your choice, no matter what."

UNILAD has contacted Katy Perry's reps for comment.
