People are furious at 'rude' Jimmy Kimmel for taking moment away from Emmy winning star Quinta Brunson

Quinta Brunson won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series, but some felt the moment was overshadowed by Jimmy Kimmel's skit

People are furious at Jimmy Kimmel for taking the moment away from Quinta Brunson as she collected her Emmy Award for Abbott Elementary, saying his behaviour was ‘rude’.

Will Arnett and Jimmy Kimmel were presenting the Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series Emmy last night (Monday 12 September), but Arnett joked that, as this was the ‘13th time in a row’ that Kimmel had lost, the star had hit the ‘skinny margaritas’ and had to be dragged on stage, seemingly passed out.

When Brunson was named winner, Kimmel remained onstage, even when she Brunson went over to him and said: “Jimmy, wake up. I won."

While the skit was met with laughs in the room, it didn’t go down too well with some viewers watching at home, who felt Kimmel’s actions were unfair on Brunson – who serves as the creator, executive producer, writer and star of ABC comedy Abbott Elementary

One person tweeted: “I must say this is the first time Jimmy Kimmel has actually pissed me off. So rude and inconsiderate to still be laying there like an absolute idiot. Can't let Quinta have her moment? Really? Guess he's just another cocky attention-seeking narcissist. #Emmys2022.”

Someone else said: “Is anyone else bothered by this stunt Jimmy Kimmel is pulling? It’s so rude. Especially to a Black woman. Like what #Emmys2022.”

A third wrote: “Jimmy Kimmel you’re so weird, you should've just got off the stage... Quinta is winning her first Emmy and you're making her moment about you and a tired ass bit nobody watching at home found funny.”

Will Arnett had joked that he'd had too many skinny margaritas.

Brunson became the first Black woman to be nominated for three Emmys in the comedy category, having received nods this year for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, Outstanding Comedy Series (as executive producer) and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

Thankfully, it doesn’t seem like her mock run-in with Kimmel took the shine out of her evening, telling press after her big win that she didn’t mind too much – joking there was still time to ‘punch him’ for what he did.

“I don’t know, I know Jimmy Kimmel,” she told reporters.

Thankfully, Brunson didn't seem too upset by the joke.

“The bit didn’t bother me. Honestly, Jimmy gave me my first big late-night spot, he was one of the first people to see Abbott Elementary. He was the first person to message me on Instagram. He was so excited it was going to be on ABC.

"I was happy it was Jimmy. He’s one of the comedy godfathers. Tomorrow maybe I’ll be mad at him.”

Brunson, who is due to be Kimmel’s guest on his late night show tomorrow (Wednesday 14 September) added: “Maybe I’ll punch him.”
