Jimmy Kimmel and his wife, Molly McNearney, have offered a candid look into discussions surrounding his eventual retirement from late-night television.

Kimmel, who has hosted ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! since January 2003, is the longest-tenured active late-night host currently on American broadcast television.

Alongside McNearney—the show’s longtime executive producer and co-head writer—the pair have steered the series through multiple political eras, format evolutions, and high-profile contract extensions.

Speaking about the show's longevity on the Armchair podcast with Dax Shepard, McNearney admitted that while stepping away has crossed their minds, walking away from the platform entirely remains a difficult prospect.

"It's hard to imagine walking away from something that is so fulfilling and fun," McNearney said. "Every day is new. Every day is a new challenge."

McNearney explained that producing a nightly monologue and managing a topical comedy show requires an immense mental and physical investment, particularly when balancing current events with family life.

"It's a lot of work," McNearney explained. "It's a grind. And especially in this news cycle, it can be exhausting. But at the same time, we're very lucky to have the jobs we have."

That exhausting news cycle has frequently placed the couple directly in the political crosshairs, most notably through Kimmel’s long-running public feud with Donald Trump.

Kimmel previously revealed that ABC network executives had pressured him to ease up on his relentless Trump jokes during the 2016–2020 administration over fears of alienating conservative viewers.

Kimmel famously stood his ground, making it clear that he was willing to be fired rather than censor his material:

"I just said, 'If that’s what you want to do, I understand and I don’t begrudge you for it, but I’m not going to do that,'" Kimmel previously recalled. "'So if you want someone else to host the show, then that's fine too.'"

The hostility has gone both ways, with Trump repeatedly mocking Kimmel's ratings and publicly attacking his performances as the host of the Academy Awards—attacks Kimmel has routinely turned into viral monologue punchlines.

Finding Purpose in the Chair

Addressing the emotional toll of the job and how they manage the intense schedule alongside raising their two young children, Jane and Billy, McNearney emphasized that the sense of purpose behind the comedy keeps them grounded.

"We take it one year at a time, one contract at a time," she added. "As long as we're still having fun and feeling like we're contributing something meaningful to the conversation, we'll keep doing it."

Despite ongoing retirement speculation, both Kimmel and McNearney emphasized the unique privilege and responsibility of hosting a major network platform.

McNearney noted that seeing the impact of Kimmel’s monologues—particularly when addressing healthcare advocacy, political accountability, and national events—reinforces why the job remains so special to their family.
