YouTube and Twitch sensation Dream has responded to people describing him as ugly after he finally unveiled his face.

The popular online personality, 23, unveiled his face for the first time on 2 October in a video entitled: "hi, I'm Dream", which went on to receive a mixed response from fans and critics alike.

Dream kept his face hidden for eight years.

As reported by Time magazine, this was a topic of huge interest to fans as Dream's anonymity was a part of his appeal, and this is arguably reflected by the fact that over 38 million people have viewed the video at the time of writing.

The magazine said: "Dream's anonymity has been one of the most alluring aspects of his persona online and that intrigue, paired with his vibrant personality, have helped him build a loyal following across social media platforms."

But while some fans were delighted to see what the Minecraft creator looked like, not everyone was so kind and the YouTuber said some of his friends were worried about his welfare in the aftermath of the reveal.

He told Bloomberg: "I got texted by so many friends of mine being like, 'Are you OK?'

"I was like, 'well, yeah'. When you have 30 million eyeballs on you, a million, two million people are going to be making jokes or mean or are not great people. When you take that big of a pool, there's going to be a portion."

The streamer ultimately took the whole thing in his stride and broke down at TwitchCon last week at the positive reaction he's also had from many fans.

"I'd never felt this feeling before - happiness but with overwhelming 'Wow, this is real, this is my life,'" he said.

The YouTuber took the criticism of his appearance in his stride.

As part of the face reveal video, Dream explained why he was finally unveiling his identity after keeping it a secret since he began his online career in 2014.

"Why now? Why are you finally revealing your face?" he said.

"It's because George - he's my best friend, he's been in the UK trying to get a Visa to come to America, to come move here and move in with me.

"George is going to be in the airport. I'm going to meet him for the first time. I've known him so long, feels like my entire life.

"My goal was to just start doing things - get out. Meet creators, say 'hi' to my friends, finally.

"Just get out in the world. I've been bunkered up.

"People are trying to leak my face. Tiny bit too much. I love you guys, but sometimes a little, little far."

Social Blade reports Dream gained over a million followers as a result of his face reveal.
