Donald Trump is no stranger to spicing things up in office and has taken steps to get his new international ‘Board of Peace’ up and running.

Multiple countries have already agreed to join the board, despite the US president struggling to get confirmation from several of his Western allies.

Trump claimed that Russia had 'accepted' the invitation, however, as per Reuters, President Vladimir Putin later clarified that it was still under consideration.

But for many, questions remain regarding what the Board of Peace will actually do on the international stage.

According to the BBC, it was originally thought to be used to help end the two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas and oversee the reconstruction of Gaza.

Back in November last year, the UN Security Council endorsed the idea pushed by Trump and his administration.

At the time, Trump wrote on Truth Social: “Congratulations to the World on the incredible Vote of the United Nations Security Council, just moments ago, acknowledging and endorsing the BOARD OF PEACE, which will be chaired by me, and include the most powerful and respected Leaders throughout the World.”

However, the latest proposed charter does not mention the Palestinian territory and appears to have expanded its desires into tackling conflicts across the world.

According to CNN, the charter draft for the Board of Peace says it's an ‘international organization’ promoting stability, peace and governance ‘in areas affected or threatened by conflict’.

The POTUS has also claimed that the organization ‘might’ replace the United Nations.

It is not clear what legal authority or enforcement tools the Board of Peace will have outside of Gaza at this stage and whether it will work with other international organizations, including the United Nations.

Which countries have joined the Board of Peace?

Reuters reports that a senior White House official confirmed that about 35 world leaders have committed to joining out of the 50 or so invitations that were sent.

This includes:

  • Saudi Arabia
  • Turkey
  • Egypt
  • Indonesia
  • Pakistan
  • Qatar
  • UAE
  • Bahrain
  • Jordan
  • Hungary
  • Morocco
  • Pakistan
  • Kosovo
  • Uzbekistan
  • Kazakhstan
  • Paraguay
  • Armenia
  • Azerbaijan
  • Vietnam

Which countries have refused to join the Board of Peace?

Western allies have been more reluctant to join, with Norway and Sweden so far declining the invitation.

Italy's Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has said joining the board appeared problematic and France reportedly intends to decline the invitation.

Allies, the UK, Germany and Japan have not yet made their stance on the matter public.

Ukraine’s diplomats are also examining the invitation but President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said it would be difficult for him to be on a board with Putin after almost four years of war.
