A body language expert has weighed in on a rather awkward interaction between Justin Bieber and Trevor Noah at the Grammys.

Trevor Noah hosted the Grammys on February 1, and things seemed to go pretty much to plan aside from a few blunders from Cher.

However, doing what hosts do, Noah decided to work the room and make some jokes with the many celebrities sitting down. All was going well until he got to Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber, when things seemed to turn a bit awkward, according to some social media users.

Noah spoke to Bieber, who remained pretty much stone-faced during the encounter. This led some users to question whether there was any unresolved tension between the comedian and singer, such as one social media user who tweeted: "Do Trevor Noah and Justin Bieber have some sort of beef or? that was painful to watch."

Noah said: “This man has done so many amazing things. His album Swag nominated, four Grammy nominations. And I think, better than any Grammy, he's come back as a new dad. Congratulations to both of you."

The host continued: “My personal favorite thing Justin Bieber has done over the past year is, he told Apple to move the dictation button on the keyboard. Hero, Justin. Now I just need you to tell them to make a new feature where, when you search on your phone, it finds things. Please, Justin, we need you."

Body language expert Judi James spoke with the Daily Mail about the interaction and revealed whether there appeared to be anything going on under the surface.

James said: “There's no signs of any authentic or personal beef between Justin and Trevor Noah here, although Justin's body language rituals as Noah hones in on him would suggest a guy happy to play along for a bit, but to also imply he has boundaries when it comes to any ridicule.

“His initial expression is one of good-humored wariness but with a wince that suggests those boundaries. His brows are raised and angled in a question, but his cheeks are rounded and puffed up to hint at humor. His lips are tightly clamped to show he's not going to laugh out loud to encourage any jokes.”

The body language expert also noted that Bieber’s demeanor changes ever so slightly as Noah gives the singer compliments. She suggested that his expression becomes ‘solemn’, suggesting that he is potentially 'wary of a punchline coming after the praise'.

While a dig doesn’t actually come from Noah, James argued that by the Apple joke, despite the laughter from his wife, Justin ‘folds his arms in a barrier suggests he has pretty much had enough by this point.’
