Reason NFL star Jay Cutler is only serving a four-day prison sentence after making deal

The former NFL quarterback pleaded guilty to driving under the influence

Former NFL star Jay Cutler has started serving a four-day prison sentence after rear-ending another car while driving under the influence.

Cutler was arrested on 17 October 2024, and police found that the NFL star was over the limit for alcohol while driving, describing him as being 'visibly intoxicated' at the scene.

During the incident, police observed Cutler with bloodshot eyes and noticed that he appeared to be slurring his words, court documents said.

The former quarterback allegedly told the officers that he had not consumed any alcohol. However, when they questioned him further, he admitted that he had 'a little bit'.

He had also reportedly offered the driver of the other vehicle $2,000 if he didn't call the police and allowed him to leave.

To make matters more serious, officers also found a rifle and a handgun on the backseat of Cutler's car - possessing a handgun under the influence is a serious offence in Tennessee.

The charges included driving under the influence, possessing a gun while intoxicated, failure to exercise due care, and implied consent. However, in late August, Cutler was able to take a plea deal in which he agreed to 'forfeit' the Glock pistol which was involved in the incident.

In exchange for this, the weapons charges were not pursued, and Cutler was only charged with driving under the influence, violation of implied consent law, and failure to exercise due care.

In addition to the four days in jail, which began on 29 September, Cutler's license was revoked, and he will be subject to supervised probation for a year.

The probation will include regular drug tests, which will be conducted at random.

Cutler must also pay a $350 fine, which is the minimum fine that can be imposed on someone's first offence in Knox County, Tennessee, where the incident took place.

Fortunately, no one was seriously injured when Cutler rear-ended the vehicle.

Cutler played as a quarterback in the NFL for 12 seasons.

He has three children with his ex-wife, reality star Kristin Cavallari, whom he separated from in 2020, with the pair having public spats on social media since then.

This included Cavallari claiming that she 'never got a penny' from Cutler, comments which he called 'reckless'.

"I think it’s borderline slander to insinuate that there was zero dollars split during the marriage that each side got," he said on the Take It Outside podcast.

“It’s insanity and it’s completely false, completely untrue. I hate that I even have to address it, honestly.”
