Former NFL star Jay Cutler begins serving prison sentence after making deal

The star is currently behind bars - but won't stay there for long

Former NFL star Jay Cutler has started serving his time behind bars as part of a plea deal.

The former football quarterback, who played in the NFL for 12 seasons, is facing a brief stint in jail after making a deal with prosecutors.

Cutler, who pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanour DUI, was booked into Williamson County Jail in Franklin, Tennessee, on Monday (September 29) to serve four days behind bars.

The 42-year-old former Broncos, Bears and Dolphins quarterback, faces the short sentence after cutting a deal with prosecutors to drop a weapons charge he was facing.

The incident unfolded during a car accident in October last year, during which the athlete had rear-ended another vehicle.

Upon arriving to the scene, cops suspected Cutler was intoxicated.

They reported he had bloodshot eyes and was slurring his words when they spoke to him at the scene on October 17.

He also refused to take a field sobriety test at the scene, though later had a blood sample taken at a local hospital and reportedly told officers he had 'a little bit' when asked if he had consumed alcohol.

Police also said they found two firearms in his car, one of which was loaded.

Cutler then faced charges including driving under the influence, reckless driving leading to a collision, violating implied consent regulations and unlawfully possessing a firearm while intoxicated.

The father-of-three, whom he shares with his ex-wife, reality TV star Kristin Cavallari, pleaded guilty in court and was sentenced to four days behind bars.

The judge ordered Cutler to attend a DUI safety course and suspended his driver's license for a year.

He has also been ordered to pay a $350 fine and serve a further year of unsupervised probation.

The other charges were dropped as part of his plea deal.

Cutler's sentence comes following his messy divorce from Cavallari.

After welcoming Camden, 13, Jaxon, 11 and Saylor, nine, the pair formally split in April 2020 after seven years of marriage.

Since the divorce, the pair have been publicly jibing at each other on social media, mostly over money and Cutler's alleged $128 million fortune.

Cavallari claimed she 'never got a penny' from the NFL star following the split, to which he snapped back that her comments were 'reckless.'

"I think it’s borderline slander to insinuate that there was zero dollars split during the marriage that each side got," he said on the 'Take It Outside' podcast.

“It’s insanity and it’s completely false, completely untrue. I hate that I even have to address it, honestly.”

“I’ve got a divorce decree,” he continued. “I’ve got something that’s signed by the judge — it’s, like, 67 pages [and] it says the number breakdown.”
