Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of notorious drug lord El Chapo, has been released from prison after serving around half of her three year sentence.

In 2021, she had been found guilty of three counts of assisting her husband's Sinaloa Cartel, after admitting to helping him run parts of his criminal empire.

The charges against her included conspiracy to launder money, engagement in illicit financial dealings and distributing illegal drugs such as heroin, cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine.

She had been arrested in February 2021 at Dulles International Airport, Virginia, and had been behind bars ever since then.

She admitted to being a courier for his cartel after he was imprisoned in Mexico, and was found to have helped him escape from prison by giving him a watch with a GPS tracker that allowed an escape tunnel to be dug to his cell.

While Coronel Aispuro had been sentenced to three years in prison, and was initially to spend it in a federal prison in Texas, she was transferred to a low security facility in Los Angeles, California.

Her sentencing judge said that her punishment had been reduced after she accepted responsibility for her actions and paid a $1.5 million fine to the US government.

She will serve four years of probation following her release where authorities will continue to supervise her and be on the lookout for potential evidence of criminal activity.

During her trial, she apologized for the harm she had caused and begged for a sentence that would allow her to see her daughters grow up.
