WWE superstar Bray Wyatt dies at the age of 36

The young athlete was one of the most popular modern pro wrestlers.

WWE superstar Bray Wyatt is dead.

The 36-year-old, whose real name is Windham Rotunda, was one of the most popular modern pro wrestlers.

The devastating news was revealed by WWE legend and Chief Content Officer Triple H.

He wrote on social media: "Just received a call from WWE Hall of Famer Mike Rotunda who informed us of the tragic news that our WWE family member for life Windham Rotunda - also known as Bray Wyatt - unexpectedly passed earlier today.

"Our thoughts are with his family and we ask that everyone respect their privacy at this time."

He was a one-time WWE Champion and held the WWE Universal Championship twice.

SPORTbible said 'he often garnered comparisons to The Undertaker, whom he faced at WrestleMania 31'.

Wyatt won his first WWE Championship back in 2017 during an Elimination Chamber match before losing the title at WrestleMania 33 to Randy Orton.

He then took a lengthy hiatus from WWE in 2018, but returned for a memorable run with a new character as 'The Fiend'.

Wyatt has been seen near a wrestling ring since February this year due to illness and Wrestling News said he was on the verge of making a comeback.

There have been no details revealed about Wyatt's cause of death.
