Cruise passengers were recently delivered the chilling news that the captain of their ship had suddenly died in the middle of their vacation.
Princess Cruises announced this week that Captain Michele Bartolome died while manning a 19-night cruise around Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China.
Captain Bartolome, 52, was discovered on Monday (May 19) while the Diamond Princess ship was docked in Keelung, Taiwan, having died from a medical emergency.

Crew Center reports an announcement was made on the ship via the tannoy in the early hours, asking the medical team to respond to an emergency.
A letter was later delivered to passengers' cabins confirming the devastating news that the captain had died, as well as revealing Captain Salvatore Macera had taken over for the rest of the voyage.
Princess Cruises also posted a statement on their Facebook page, which read: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Captain Michele Bartolomei, a beloved member of the Princess Cruises family whose career at sea spanned more than 30 years. Since joining Princess in 1995, he made a lasting impact on our fleet and our guests.

"From new ship deliveries to world cruises, Captain Bartolomei’s leadership, professionalism, and deep love for the ocean inspired all who had the privilege of sailing with him.
"Our hearts are with his family during this incredibly difficult time, and we extend our deepest condolences to them.
"We also stand in support of the entire Diamond Princess crew and all team members across our fleet mourning this loss."

The cruise departed Tokyo on May 6 set for an incredible adventure of Asia, including the likes of China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
Cruise Mapper states the ship is back in Tokyo on May 25, with the letter revealing a new captain has since taken over.
Dave Wallensky, a close friend of Bartolome, has been speaking after the tragic passing of the captain.

"I’m absolutely shattered," he wrote, as per the Daily Mail. "He was one of the best things that happened to me and Lesleigh [another captain] and we spent the night last night sobbing. And laughing about what we did together. And sobbing again."
"Captain Bartolomei spent almost 30 years flying the Princess flag. He was a legend on the sea - but he was my friend."
