Marjorie Taylor Greene wants people to stop being 'overdramatic' about the Capitol riots.

On 6 January 2021, Donald Trump supporters and QAnon conspiracy theorists stormed the Capitol in Washington DC to prevent Congress from formalising and finalising then-President-elect Joe Biden's victory in the election.

Nine people died in connection with the chaos that day, including four people in the crowds, a police officer who was attacked and four other officers who took their own lives.

The riots marked the first time the Capitol had been breached since the British did it in 1814. More than 750 people from across the US have been charged in connection with their participation.

In a speech before his supporters stormed the Capitol, Trump called on them to 'fight like hell' amid his baseless claims that the election was stolen from him. It was a historic, dangerous uprising based on the former president's claims of an infringed democracy.

Enter Greene, the QAnon-supporting, Republican congresswoman from Georgia who's been the subject of constant criticism ever since she was elected, even from her own party. This includes mistaking the Gestapo for gazpacho and transphobic remarks, among many other controversies.

Deaths, injuries, an ineradicable stain on American political culture - but we should stop being so overdramatic about the riots, according to Greene.

Speaking to NBC News, she said: "The American people are fed up with this over-dramatisation of a riot that happened here at the Capitol one time. They are sick and tired of 6 January - it's over, okay?"

Greene said people 'care about the border that’s getting invaded' and the price of fuel and food.

She continued: "They’re sick and tired of the drama from all you people that run around the Capitol. And that’s all you want to talk about.

"If you want to get outside of the city and come to my district and talk to real Americans, you’re going to hear a totally different story."

The response on social media has been highly dismissive of Greene's comments. "WE ONLY TRIED TO OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT ONE TIME!! GOD!" one user joked.

Another wrote: "We aren’t getting over the domestic terrorism that happened on Jan 6th, nor the injured police officers or the families of the officers that died. We are fed up because there hasn’t been accountability and consequences from those that committed sedition to include you and colleagues."

A third tweeted: "9/11 only happened one time over 20 years ago and I still have to take my shoes off to get on a plane. Hell, there's even been some accountability for 9/11 (thanks Obama) yet still almost none for 1/6. I think we can care for awhile longer."
