Superman Star Admits He Hasn't Watched Any Superman Films

Superman & Lois star Tyler Hoechlin has revealed the reason why he hasn't watched any Superman films

Superman & Lois star Tyler Hoechlin has revealed the reason why he has never watched a Superman film.

The former Teen Wolf actor has donned the red and blue caped costume since 2016 when he started making guest appearances as the Man of Steel in Supergirl.

Since 2021 the 34-year-old has starred alongside Elizabeth Tulloch as Clark Kent aka Superman and Lois Lane respectively in the series which explores the iconic couple getting used to family life as the parents of two sons.

Comic book fans will know that Tyler is not the first actor to portray Superman on the big or small screen.

British actor Henry Cavill most recently played the iconic Krypton native in a series of films as part of the DC Extended Universe, 2013’s Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice alongside Ben Affleck in 2016 and both cuts of Justice League.

The beloved late actor Christopher Reeve starred in four Superman movies before his death in 2004.

On television, Dean Cain starred as the iconic superhero in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman between 1993 and 1997.

Meanwhile, Tom Welling starred as a teenage Clark Kent in the coming-of-age drama Smallville.

Despite the Superman character being a stalwart of cinema for decades, Hoechlin has avoided watching any of the past movies.

At a recent appearance at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con as part of the Teen Wolf: The Movie panel, he chatted about never having seen a live-action Superman film, FandomWire reports.

Before superhero fans fly to conclusions, it’s because he does not want any of the past interpretations of the character to influence his own performance.

You can breathe a sigh of relief as he did reveal that he plans to binge-watch all of the Superman films once the show is over.

But after The CW’s Arrow adaptation ran for eight seasons and The Flash was renewed for an impressive ninth season in May, Tyler might have to wait a few years.

Tyler's performance in the series, which wrapped up its second season last month, has been praised by fans and critics alike.

Even the actor's co-stars, who have seen previous Superman performances, have weighed in.

In an interview with Looper, Hoechlin’s co-star Alex Garfin, who portrays one of Lois and Clark’s sons, spoke highly about the actor's performance and how it measures up to Reeve’s.

He said: "No, we really haven't seen someone absolutely nail Clark and Superman since [Christopher] Reeve, and really, Tyler, not watching people, he said that was his strategy, right? He said he never wanted to see any Superman. He doesn't want to watch any Superman until this is all over. Then, he will watch it all to understand what everyone's been talking about this whole time.

“He brings a new light to the role. He brings himself to the role, and he brings a volume of experience going all the way back to 'Road to Perdition' when he was a kid.

“The magic of Tyler Hoechlin is not even in the crazy, deep emotional scenes, even though he absolutely is amazing at them. It's always in the Clark stuff. It's his ability to have fun on screen."
