The Boys creator Eric Kripke has confirmed that season five will be the final outing of the show.

He wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter): "#TheBoys Season 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season!

"Always my plan, I just had to be cagey till I got the final OK from Vought.

"Thrilled to bring the story to a gory, epic, moist climax. Watch Season 4 in 2 DAYS, cause the end has begun!"

The post came with a redacted version of the script for the season four finale, 'Assassination run', ending with the line:

"Blackout. See you for our final season, motherf**kers!"

The news comes as a shock to fans, with The Boys being one of the most successful shows on TV.

Despite this, fans have been mostly overjoyed with the news - as it means one important thing.

One post on X read: "Perfect amount, glad they’re not overdoing it. 5 seems like the best for every plot line."

Another said: "I feel like 5 seasons is the perfect amount for any great show."

One fan said: "Okay I was worried they'd drag it out for too long. I don't want another Supernatural situation."

Kripke was also the showrunner for Supernatural.

In a Twitter Q&A from 2020, Kripke said that the show had been planned for a five-season arc, but the show ended up getting a whopping 15 seasons.

In an interview released earlier this month with Empire, he said: “You can’t build a show that’s about these two forces of Homelander and Butcher slowly closing in on each other without bringing that to a head.

“Whenever that last episode occurs, I know what happens.”

This came despite the fact that he told Inverse: "I have learned since then to not try to call the seasons as the person who, and this is without hyperbole, is literally the most wrong in entertainment history of how many seasons their show should go.”

With The Boys coming to a close, it assuages worries from fans that the show would be dragged out, with Kripke making the choice to end the show after next season.

With The Boys season four dropping later this week, reviews came out today for the show. This news addresses one of the main criticisms in reviews released for the new season.

Emily Murray's review of season four for GamesRadar said it is 'wildly entertaining but the cracks are starting to show'.

If that's the case, the show appears to be ending before it breaks.
