Creator of The Boys Eric Kripke has addressed when the show will end, with the fourth season of the hit superhero show set to premiere next week.

Kripke, who has acted as showrunner for the Amazon Prime show since its creation, has finally opened up about whether the show will end with the previously announced season five.

The Boys was a surprise hit for Amazon – with the show being one of the few in the world to come anywhere near challenging Netflix’s heavy hitters for viewing minutes over the last few years.

Season four is set to pick up where season three left off, with Homelander having murdered a protestor in broad daylight.

Season five has already been announced so the big question amongst The Boys fans is simple: “How can the show keep going much longer?”

Kripke, in a Twitter Q&A back in 2020, stated that the plan for the show was a five-season arc, with that being all that has currently been greenlit.

In an interview, released today by Empire, he expanded on the difficulties with dragging the show out for too long.

He said: “You can’t build a show that’s about these two forces of Homelander and Butcher slowly closing in on each other without bringing that to a head.

“Whenever that last episode occurs, I know what happens.”

This comes despite the fact that yesterday Kripke walked back his commitment to stick to his five season plan.

The showrunner, who also created Supernatural, told Inverse: “I have learned since then to not try to call the seasons as the person who, and this is without hyperbole, is literally the most wrong in entertainment history of how many seasons their show should go.”

Supernatural was initially slated for five seasons, however the show went on for a full 15 seasons before eventually ending.

He went on to say: “Someone pointed that out to me and I was like, ‘You're right. That's ridiculous. I need to keep my mouth shut.’ And so I will.”

That doesn’t mean you should expect 15 seasons however, as he finally told Inverse:

“No one was more wrong in all of human history about how many seasons their show was going to go than this guy. So, I am not going to make that same mistake twice.”

Whilst we can all agree we’re hyped for the return of the show, some fans are dismayed at the idea of dragging it out too long without changing anything up.

One fan posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) to say: “I love The Boys, but it's a show that I have a horrible feeling is overstaying its welcome.

“You can only do "This might be the thing that'll kill Homelander" so many times before it has diminishing returns, and right now, the returns are diminishing.”

Whilst the show has been great in every season we’ve seen so far, here’s hoping it doesn’t overstay its welcome…
