A new TV show leaving viewers bawling their eyes out has soared to number one in the UK and US' Prime Video charts.

If you're looking for a new show to watch, you need to look no further than this hit eight-part series co-created by the same person that introduced the world to The Vampire Diaries.

However, unlike Julie Plec's first creation, this is set in modern times with no mythical creatures. It's based on the New York Times best-selling novel by E. Lockhart.

The show follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman - the heiress to a fortune that her grandfather amassed, and her close group of friends.

These mates are dubbed 'the liars' during their summer trip to her grandad's private island in New England.

A mysterious accident occurs which will change Cadence's life forever, these same close friends, as well as everyone else, appears to be hiding something.

The show is called We Were Liars, and it has become an instant hit with Prime Video viewers. For the last week, it has sat at number one in the overall chart for everything on the platform in the US.

While over in the UK, it also boast of top spot.

Fans who have managed to binge-watch the entire season in the eight days since it was released, on Wednesday last week (June 18), have all been raving about the show - while also conceding how sad the ending was.

"The ending of #wewereliars got me all f**ed up. bawled my eyes out, i was not ready.. thats why they never visited or called.. they couldn’t," one person posted on Twitter.

Another added: "The final episode of #WeWereLiars was an absolute masterpiece!! Huge thanks to @julieplec and @cadlymack for bringing this book to life. The cast was amazing! And special congrats to @CandiceAccola, you were perfect as always."

Speaking about why she opted to produce the series, Plec told Amazon MGM Studios - alongside her co-creator Carina Adly MacKenzie - that it had stood out for them.

They said: "We’ve been obsessed with this beloved story for years and for a while it seemed like it might be the one that got away from us. But finally, we are elated to be bringing it to life with everyone at Prime Video and UTV, who are just as passionate about this twisty tale as we are.

"We‘re also incredibly grateful that the author has joined our creative team behind the scenes. As die-hard book fans ourselves, we have one message to the many loyal readers out there: if anyone asks you how it ends… just lie."
