If you're missing the chaos of Grey's Anatomy or ER, then Prime Video has a gripping medical drama just for you.

From ER contributing writer and producer R. Scott Gemmill comes a gripping hospital drama set in Pittsburgh.

The TV series has been so well-received that it won five of the 13 Emmys it was nominated for, including Outstanding Drama Series and Casting.

And if you're sick of having to suspend your disbelief, then look no further; those working in the medical field have praised the show for its accuracy and realism.

Initially premiering on HBO Max in January, it's also available to stream via the HBO Prime Video add-on. Recently, social media users have been praising the series as their favorite drama of recent times.

Set across one 15-hour shift, the show follows the workers at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Each episode covers one painstaking hour of the shift, immersing viewers in the unrelenting pace of the emergency department.

Dr Michael 'Robby' Robinavitch (Noah Wyle) is the senior attending physician overseeing the shift.

Haunted by traumatic memories linked to the death of his mentor during the COVID-19 pandemic, Robby must push on as he guides a team of doctors, residents and medical students.

The staff roster includes the difficult Dr Heather Collins (Tracy Ifeachor), right-hand man Dr Frank Langdon (Patrick Ball), charge nurse Dana Evans (Katherine LaNasa) and third-year medical resident Dr Samira Mohan (Supriya Ganesh).

The series in question is called The Pitt, after the fictional hospital's nickname.

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, it's racked up an almost-flawless 95 per cent score. Critics hailed it a 'bracingly fresh medical drama,' as NPR's Linda Holmes summed it up as 'a very sharp season of television with outstanding performances across the board.'

Fans, meanwhile, labelled it 'phenomenal'.

In a recent Reddit thread, one person asked for the best 'recent' shows people had watched.

"I'm talking shows that came out this year or late last year. Don't hit me up with shows from five years ago, I've seen them."

The top answer was The Pitt, as one fan said they appreciated the show’s long, continuous single shots that follow characters through the ER.

"It’s actually quite impressive," they said.

Another said their husband rewatched a couple of episodes and was 'surprised and impressed' to discover the background actors 'are speaking in medical speak totally in character doing their background acting.'

It's no doubt clever camera work and this level of attention to detail that has made the drama stand out above the rest.

Better yet, a new season of The Pitt is set to land on January 8.

Set around 10 months on from the first instalment, it will chronicle a challenging Fourth of July weekend shift, with Dr Robinavitch returning as the main character.

The Pitt is streaming now on HBO Max via Prime Video.
