Could The Simpsons be coming to an end after nearly 40 years on screen? Some fans sure seem to think so.
The Simpsons first aired in 1989 and it's seen gone on to become one of the biggest animations on TV. There's been hundreds of episodes of the show, which follows the antics of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie Simpson (along with the rest of Springfield's kooky residents).
No only has it had hundreds of episodes, but The Simpsons even got its own movie back in 2007, and it's finally getting a sequel. Twenty years after the release of the first film, The Simpsons Movie 2 will hit theaters in July 2027.
Ahead of the sequel's release, people have been sharing their thoughts on if and when The Simpsons will come to an end — and an anonymous post has sparked new theories.
The Simpsons Movie sequel will come out in 2027 (Instagram/20thcenturystudios) Posted to the Fauxmoi Reddit thread (which is dedicated to celebrity and popular culture gossip), someone using the pseudonym 'Donut' said: "This cartoon titan will officially come to an end, and the sequel to its film which was supposed to be the original finale will serve as the series finale."
While it doesn't name The Simpsons specifically, fans of the well-loved TV show have been trying to piece together the puzzle.
Someone suggested: "The Simpsons?" Replying to this, another Reddit user wrote: "That would make sense with the recent announcement, also guarantees a huge box office, but that would be crazy to see it finally end."
"Absolutely, especially with the word 'donut'," a third said of the show being The Simpsons. "Sad days, it’s my favorite show for the last 30 years."
The Simpsons has been on air nearly four decades (Disney/Fox) While many believe it would 'make sense' for the comment to be about The Simpsons, others pointed out that the cartoon has only been renewed for another four seasons.
It was announced back in April by Fox that The Simpsons will run until its 40th season. As part of the agreement, Family Guy, American Dad, and Bob's Burgers were commissioned for another four seasons too.
Michael Thorn, the president of Fox Television Network, said in a statement at the time (via The Independent): "This new deal celebrates the eternal popularity of these iconic comedies, as well as the enduring, prolific relationship we continue to enjoy with our friends at 20th Television Animation and the brilliant creators - that goes double for Seth [MacFarlane] this time around - and incredible voices behind these contemporary classics."
Meanwhile, back in the July, Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons, assured TV fans that 'there’s no end in sight' regarding the popular yellow family's future.
