Creator of The Simpsons reveals exactly when the show will end and fans aren't happy

Don't forget, the Simpsons are here forever

Matt Groening addressed one of the longest standing questions about the Simpsons and its future during an appearance at Comic-Con.

The Simpsons is one of the most influentual animated TV shows in history, and to this day, it holds the title of the longest-running cartoon in American history.

But with that being said, its best days really might be behind it.

That is at least according to a very vocal part of its fan base...(cough, cough, the golden age is between season 4 and 8).

Even still, the show continues to plod along and is currently on its 36th season, with the next season expected to come out later this year.

The creator behind the wild world of Springfield, Matt Groening, addressed one reoccurring question during his appearance at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday (July 27).

He explained when he will likely end the show, and his answers hasn’t gone down well on social media.

He said that currently, the show will keep going for the loveable yellow family and added ‘I honestly thought [season] 36 would be where we’d end it’.

He continued: “But no, there’s no end in sight. We’re going to keep going until somebody dies", seemingly alluding to one of the main cast voice actors dying.

As you can imagine, everyone and their mom had an opinion on this news, and it garnered some mixed responses.

Some insisted the show had already gone on for too long and had overstayed its welcome.

One user wrote: “Wouldn’t it be more gracious and respectful to have the series bow out whilst the actors are still around? Heaven forbid one of the actors does pass away whilst the series is still going. It wouldn’t feel right to continue without the OG actor(s).”

While another simply wrote: “They are milking it for too long.”

Others argued that Groening was lying and eventually AI would be used to replace the voices of those who had passed away.

One person commented: “I guarantee they will use Ai to continue the show for the next 200 years.”

Another agreed and commented: “Or in a dystopian future, the actor’s voices will be used by AI to keep the Simpsons going in perpetuity.”

With another adding: “I don't think something as “insignificant” as the death of a main cast voice actor can stop Fox or Disney. They will find a new voice and go.

“In Italy, when Tonino Accolla (Homer's voice actor) died, they replaced him with Massimo Lopez (the current voice actor), for example.”

But on the flip side, some people insisted that the show should never end, and that the mere idea of Groening mentioning the show ending was a bad omen.

Either way, with this little comment, no one is happy. What do you want to happen? Should The Simpsons go on forever?
