Stephen King fans don't have long left to watch a 'terrific' horror movie with 'the most gut-wrenching ending of all time.'

We all know by now that the acclaimed author has earned the title 'King of Horror' for very good reason.

King has penned more than 65 books in his career, with many of them going on to be adapted into smash hit films and TV shows, from Carrie to Gerald's Game and Pet Sematary to The Monkey.

But there's one particular movie that left fans shocked and has stayed with them for years after watching.

The 2007 movie, set in Maine, follows David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his young son Billy (Nathan Gamble) who head to a grocery store after a powerful storm rattles their community.

"Soon afterward, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town, trapping the Draytons and others inside the shop," the film's synopsis reads.

"Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside, but that may be nothing compared to the threat within, where a zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) calls for a sacrifice."

The film in question is called The Mist, and was directed by Frank Darabont, who also called the shots on 1994's The Shawshank Redemption.

While The Mist's premise is chilling enough, it's the movie's twist ending that left viewers traumatized.

But don't worry, I won't go spoiling it for you here.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one fan wrote: "If you haven't seen THE MIST, treat yourself. A really terrific horror with one of the most downbeat, gut-wrenching endings I've ever seen."

A second described it as the 'most morbid and sad ending of all time' as a third weighed in: "The ending of this film is one you will NEVER forget.

"Years later, and I don't remember what happened in the film, but cannot forget its ending."

A fourth agreed, writing after a re-watch: "Not many movies make me turn my head but this one is so stressful and I have winced so many times."

According to JustWatch, The Mist will be leaving Amazon Prime Video in the US on Monday March 31, so fans only have until the end of the month to watch it.

As for British fans, the movie is currently available to stream on the UK service - and it looks as though it's set to stay.
