Netflix has just dropped a new apocalyptic thriller with an absolutely stacked cast

The tense new thriller has arrived just in time for Christmas

With Christmas just around the corner, it's time to settle down in your cozies and put on some classic holiday films.

Whether it's Miracle on 34th Street or The Holiday, there's usually at least one movie the whole family can enjoy.

But sometimes we don't want to feel all sentimental and hopeful at Christmas. Some of us like to feel on edge and panicked by an impending threat - in the context of a film viewing, of course.

That's where Netflix's latest thriller comes in.

Check out the trailer:

Leave the World Behind has a star-studded cast and is bound to keep you on the edge of your seat.

The film's official Netflix premise reads: "A family vacation on Long Island is interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a mysterious blackout.

"As the threat grows more imminent, both families must decide how best to survive the potential crisis, all while grappling with their own place in this collapsing world."

Familiar faces appearing in this nail-biter include Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, Myha’la Herrold and Kevin Bacon.

The movie, based on a 2020 novel of the same name, is directed and produced by Sam Esmail.

It had a limited run in cinemas last month before dropping on Netflix today (December 8).

The trailer alone was enough to get Netflix viewers excited, as they took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their reactions.

"Whoever put this trailer together deserves a raise and should do all trailers for movies," one viewer wrote.

Another added: "These trailers deserve their own award show. Should be a shining example of how it is done properly."

While a third penned: "Ok not missing this."

And someone else commented: "That trailer for Leave the World Behind with Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke and Julia Roberts looks fire. I can’t wait for it to hit Netflix next weekend."

Speaking about her role as Amanda, Roberts told Yahoo Entertainment: "To be put into this circumstance that she thinks she's created this sort of paradise weekend for her and her family, but everything that makes her unsteady starts to come into play, with people and places and [how in] the middle of the night [there are] people at the door.

"To watch each one of those threads unravel was fascinating.

"I love the opportunity to make it really clear from the jump of a movie exactly who the person is that I'm playing."

Leave the World Behind is now available to stream on Netflix.
