A new Netflix sci-fi thriller starring Jennifer Lopez has sent viewers flocking to social media in debate.

While J Lo is known to many as the star of iconic rom-coms such as 2001's The Wedding Planner, 2002's Maid in Manhattan and Monster in Law (2005), that's not to say the actor hasn't also starred in some more fast-paced, tense films and her latest release is no exception.

Prepare to add it to your list even if sci-fi isn't your thing:

    Cast, crew and synopsis

The thriller was directed by Brad Peyton - known for San Andreas (2015) and childhood favorite Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore (2010).

It stars not only the icon that is J-Lo, but also the likes of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings's Simu Liu, Once Upon A Times' Lana Parrilla, The King's Man's Mark Strong and Invincible's Sterling K Brown.

The story centres government counterterrorism analyst Atlas (Lopez) who is forced to ally up with artificial intelligence despite her hatred and distrust of it in a bid to fight a greater evil.

And released onto Netflix just days ago on May 24, viewers are already flocking online with their reviews of the film - titled Atlas.

    Reactions

Unfortunately for J-Lo, the film has seen a pretty poor Rotten Tomatoes response with an audience score of a meagre 54 percent and an even more dire Tomatometer score of just 17.

However, that's not stopped fans of the film from taking to social media to defend it - one user even taking to LADbible Facebook group Netflix Bangers to share their review.

They wrote: "Just finished watching Atlas and it was pretty awesome. I am not a huge JLo fan but this was better than I expected it to be. If I had one complaint, it was filmed a bit dark and I had to strain to see some scenes, other than that I loved it! Who else has seen it? Thoughts? No spoilers please."

"I enjoyed it, the graphics were top tier, Jlo delivered, the cast was amazing, story line made sense and the end was perfect! 10/10 for me," another said.

A third commented: "I’m a sci-fi fanatic and I loved her in this!!!! Say what you want about this woman but she gives entertainment EVERY TIME…"

"Really enjoyed this movie reminded me of 'TITAN FALL' and 'AVATAR'," a fourth even wrote.

Alas, others couldn't help but go in on the film.

A user said: "I watched a few minutes yesterday and it was just a big NO for me."

"Did not enjoy. Fell asleep," a second added.

    Another said: "Lousy."

And a final resolved: "It got real bad lol very corny but it’s a Jlo movie soooo…"

You can catch Atlas on Netflix now.
