Netflix's top-trending action movie has distracted viewers with one major detail.

Believe it or not, we're only just halfway through January and I'm ready for winter to be done with already.

If you're feeling the same, you might be getting lost in some of Netflix's new additions to help you through.

From one of the most popular horror films of the last seven years, to a series lifting the lid on the chaotic Jerry Springer Show, there's plenty to keep your mind occupied. But it's the streaming giant's latest police drama movie that's got people talking.

According to FlixPatrol, it has been watched for 28,000,000 hours already, earning the number one spot on the global Netflix film charts.

But people have been shocked to realize that its lead star isn't US actor Patrick Dempsey.

Set in Paris, the French action-thriller is actually led by Guillaume Canet, who plays an ex-elite agent called Franck.

He's forced to confront his past when violent, masked men break into their house and kidnap his pregnant wife Leo (Stéphane Caillard).

Franck must delve deep - and in the direction of a former colleague - to figure out what the hell is going on.

The movie in question is called Ad Vitam, and you can watch the trailer below:

Fans have since pointed out how much main man Canet looks like Grey's Anatomy's Dempsey.

Taking to social media, people admitted they instantly mistook the French actor for the American celebrity.

One person wrote: "Started Ad Vitam on Netflix and it auto played in English dubbing so I just assumed the lead actor was Patrick Dempsey.

"Then I realized they were speaking French and I was like, Patrick Dempsey speaks French?!

"When did Guillaume Canet take Patrick Dempsey’s face?!"

A second agreed: "This man in the Ad Vitam movie on Netflix looks exactly like Patrick Dempsey… they need a DNA test asap."

While a third asked: "Just watched Ad Vitam… how are you going to say that’s not Patrick Dempsey?"

Fortunately, a French person was on hand to shed some light on the situation.

In response to the comments, they said: "Here in France people have been calling him 'the French Patrick Dempsey' for a while.

"The resemblance has always been there but the more time passes the more noticeable it becomes."

Hollywood mix-ups aside, reviews for Ad Vitam have been mixed, though.

One glowing fan review read: "Action, humor, romance, friendship, loyalty, tearjerker, I loved this movie, masterpiece!"

A second said: "Pleasant action filled movie, a decent plot that could have been worked better, the main characters believable and likeable."

But not everyone had the same enthusiasm.

"The action sequences while fluid didn’t make much sense," one person reasoned, as another simply wrote: "I watched Ad Vitam on Netflix for you. Don't feel obligated to do the same."

Ad Vitam is available to stream now on Netflix.
