Netflix subscribers have never 'cried so much' after watching a movie dubbed the 'saddest film they’ve watched'.

While it's always good fun to watch a comedy for a laugh, sometimes it's nice to sit down with a box of tissues and watch something that will pull on the heartstrings.

And based on what people are talking about online, this 2022 drama will do just that as one viewer called it 'heartbreaking'.

From Zambian director Kenny Mumba, Can You See Us? is written by Andrew and Lawrence Thompson, while the latter also acted as a producer on the project.

It became the first Zambian film to be released on the popular streaming platform when it dropped in August 2023.

Can You See Us? follows young Zambian boy John Chiti, who's been through an awful ordeal after being born with albinism and being rejected by his father at birth.

Played by Thabo Kaamba as a child and George Sikazwe as a young man, he navigates a childhood of 'bullying, tragedy and cautious hope'.

The real-life Chiti is a popular Zambian singer with albinism and he reportedly served as an 'additional writer' on the script.

In a 2020 interview with the Thomas Reuters Foundation, Chiti opened up about his own experiences of rejection.

He said: “When I was born my family was confused. They couldn’t believe that I belonged and this led to the divorce of my parents.”

In 2008, Chiti founded the Albinism Foundation of Zambia.

“I used to blame myself for being a person with albinism. I grew up with low self-esteem because I thought I’m not human enough,” he added. “But it’s not us that have to change, it’s society that needs to change its attitudes towards us.”

While the movie may have released a few years ago, many subscribers have only just tuned in for the first time and it has become the hot topic of conversation on LADbible's Netflix Bangers Facebook page.

"Have your tissues ready," one person warned.

A second added: "I cry so much watching this."

While a third penned: "The saddest film, but a real eye opener too, it’s horrific that an innocent child can endure so much hatred. Broke my heart."

Plenty of other viewers warned it is 'heartbreaking' and would tug on your 'heart strings'.

Can You See Us? is available to stream on Netflix now.
