The first trailer for thrilling murder mystery sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery has dropped and teased audiences with the tantalising prospect of death and deceit.

Daniel Craig is returning as detective Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson's detective sequel, which will release on Netflix on 23 December.

If you can't wait that long to see another helping of famous faces starring in a frantic and funny whodunnit then it will also be releasing in select cinemas.

It's been a couple of years since news of the Knives Out sequel was first announced and we're finally getting close to seeing the movie hit our screens.

A mysterious set of invitations bringing a group of strangers to a private island is prime murder mystery material.

Also starring Edward Norton, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista, part of the puzzle teased by the trailer is working out just who is the criminal at the heart of everything.

However, Johnson has suggested that fans not put too much effort into trying to solve the mystery themselves and instead just focus on letting the movie tell a story.

He said: "The reality is that what makes something successful is a story, and that’s true of a whodunit as well.

"Are there characters that you care about? Are you pulled through emotionally? Are you on a ride with them with this story? Then the revelation of it all coming together and the whodunit, and the fact that it is all layered in there, is part of the fun of the genre.

"But, in a way, it can't be the spine that actually is supporting the body of the whole thing. You just need a good story."

Then again, how can the audience resist getting sucked into trying to work out who did it in a whodunnit?

It will be up to Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc to crack the case.

The director also paid tribute to legendary murder mystery writer Agatha Christie and the way 'she found a way into it that felt unique and fresh' every single time she set up the next perplexing whodunnit.

He went on to say that he realised his movie should be a 'rollercoaster and not a crossword puzzle', explaining that what really mattered was bringing the audience through an interesting story rather than plonking a mystery in front of them and letting the viewers try to solve it.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is landing on Netflix on 23 December, and will also be appearing in some cinemas at a yet-to-be specified date.
