Community creator Dan Harmon has confirmed the news that fans of the series have been clamouring for: a movie is on the horizon.

The producer provided affirmation to the rumours that a film based on the cult TV series was in the works while speaking to The Wrap about season six of Rick and Morty.

Cast member Alison Brie has previously let loose that ‘legitimate conversations’ about the spinoff were coming to fruition, with Harmon adding ‘legitimacy is here’.

He told The Wrap: “I’ll confirm what Alison said which is that legitimacy is here, conversations and agreements are happening.

“There’s a story – who knows if we’ll end up sticking to it, but it was something we had to compile in order to take it out and court various venues. And now negotiations happen.”

The sitcom series wrapped up in 2015 after 110 episodes over six seasons.

It starred the likes of Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, and Ken Jeong, who have expressed their desire to reprise their roles in an eventual movie.

It’s a concept fans have been after since well before the series had wrapped up.

The hashtag ‘#sixseasonsandamovie’ had become a rallying cry for Community fans after it was first said by the character Abed Nadir, who was played by Danny Pudi, in season two.

The impetus was that ‘six seasons and movie’ was the ideal run time for a TV show.

The idea was even acknowledged at the end of its final episode with a title card that read ‘and a movie’, essentially poking fun at the premise that the series had created itself.

That was more than seven years ago, but Harmon says fans may have to wait a bit longer.

He continued: “Now, I say that with such caution, because sometimes the audience is like, ‘So that means what a year, two years?’ I could have said what I just said three years ago and it would have been almost as accurate, and can you imagine if I had said that three years ago?

“That’s me setting people up for three years of abusive neglect and making them feel forgotten, and it’s hard enough to just say nothing.”

So essentially the movie was in the works as early as three years ago, so don’t hold your breath for a confirmed release date anytime soon.

But Harmon says it’s now ‘a matter of when and not if’.

So rejoice Community fans. The hashtag the show promised may finally be coming to fruition.
